Gaming thoughts for 2009
Assassin's Creed II (PS3)

This was a surprising improvement on the original. Dare I say it feels like an actual game, rather than a series of repetative tasks. Combat was also vastly improved and the story kept me interested from beginning to end (the interest in the story was the only thing that kept me playing the first game). As I was playing it felt more like Ezio was an actual assassin, as opposed to a bumbling idiot like Altair who coudln't who noisily hacked away at thongs of guards because he can't figure out how to be stealthy. The one knock I'd give it is that they didn't really do a good job of incorporating the new gadgets like the hidden gun and the flying machine. Also it was incredibly easy and short. I managed to get through it in a single week of playing.

Fallout 3 (PC)

I did not like any of the Elder Scrolls games that I played. I loved this game though. Watching heads and limbs explode in slow motion never gets old. I was kind of surprised that a FPS/RPG hybrid could work so well. It was also one of the only games I've ever seen pull off the "do whatever the fuck you want" so successfully. In fact, even being a goody too shoes has its own consequences!

Dragon Age: Origins (PC)

Bioware to this date has never delivered a bad RPG. Yes, the story was essentially a Tolkien rip off and had the one of the most horribly cliched premises I've ever seen in a fantasy rpg. Still, it was enjoyable and it was fun uncovering the backstories of all the characters involved. It was kind of a shame though that your choices are so limited in creating a character (3 races, 3 classes), but still it warranted a 2nd playthrough after I finished it the 1st time.

Wii Punch Out! (Wii)

Ah, nostalgia. This plays just like the original game, only it's 10 times harder. The first time I played it I was annihilated by Glass Joe. Glass fucking. Joe. Unfortunately by the time you get to the Title Defense portion of the game it reaches a frustrating point that is too crazy. I still can't bring myself to finish it.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3

Single player campaign was kind of fun, but to be honest it was kind of blah. The CnC series for a long time has always been about zerg fests without any real strategy and this one was no different. The in game videos were a treat though, and the co-op campaign was a pretty novel idea. The Japanese faction was also pretty interesting to play as well.

Street Fighter IV (PS3)

It had been a long time since I had played a Street Fighter game, as I had skipped Street Fighter III. Simply put, the best arcade fighting game I have ever played. It was amazing how they recreated every single original character so faithfully and still managed to make a fairly balanced game.
